I'm all right Jack, pull the ladder up…

Sir,

As a newcomer to Cyprus, I was greatly offended by the article which appeared in your edition of the 20th August under the heading “Brits go home?”

In two consecutive paragraphs, I was informed that I was part of an “invasion” – and with quotes only from those backing up this negative viewpoint.

Retired naval officer ‘John’ in particular, obviously happy that he had the opportunity to move to this lovely island over 14 years ago, now resents other doing the same. “I’m all right Jack, pull the ladder up” would appear to cover his philosophy. He certainly does seem to be very unlucky that he, apparently, has difficulty going into a supermarket without being showered by abuse! Then again, perhaps with his “those people” attitude he brings it on himself.

I would not doubt that, as in any great influx of people anywhere, there are a few bad apples, but to suggest, as your article does, that “the second wave of Brits” are all antagonistic yobs is totally ridiculous.
