Police step up security for football match

THE police have announced that they will be taking extra security measures for Monday’s football match between leading teams APOEL Nicosia and last year’s championship winners, Apollonas of Limassol.
The game, which will take place at the GSP stadium in Nicosia, will begin at 8pm, while the gates will open at 6pm.

Police have called on fans to arrive at the stadium at least half an hour before kick-off, to avoid possible chaos.

APOEL fans will take over the west, east and south sides of the stadium and all parking areas west and south of GSP. Away team Apollonas fans will take the north part.

Police said the north side of the stadium would be blocked off, preventing any contact between rival fans.

“It is emphasised that it is strictly forbidden to enter the stadium with flares, fireworks and other dangerous objects, as well as banners of political, abusive or other provocative nature, and clothing baring political emblems,” police warned yesterday.

Both clubs have a history of crowd trouble among their fans.
