Three men in prison break

THREE prisoners escaped from the holding centres of the central prisons yesterday by cutting through the steel bars of a second floor window.

The three 22-year-olds – Kumar K. Sunny, Gabriel Hugos and R.B. Sukri Ramadan – broke out of the prison between 4 and 6.30am yesterday.

Police chief Charalambos Koulentis said that after cutting the steel bars of the second floor window, the three prisoners – an Indian and two Iraqis – seem to have used sheets to lower themselves to the ground.

Koulentis said that it “appears that the cutting [of the bars] was done by a small fretsaw.”

After initial investigations, the head of Nicosia Police suspended five police officers – two sergeants and three constables – for disciplinary offenses surrounding the circumstances of the prison break.

Searches are under way for the three men, who were being held for an illegal stay in Cyprus.

The police have asked that anyone with information on the whereabouts of the three men please contact Nicosia CID or the nearest police station, or call the number 1460.
