Police seek identity of dead man

AN unidentified foreign man found unconscious with head injuries on Regina Street in Nicosia on Thursday night has died of his injuries, and is being kept at Nicosia General Hospital’s morgue as police search for his identity.

Police are desperate for some indication of who he is, but with the summer vacations it has been hard for them to find anyone who may know him. Their work has also been cut out by the fact that nobody so far has tried looking for him.

Witnesses saw the man, believed to be around 25 years old, jumping on and off the municipality’s Ledra Street train on Thursday night. It was then that he apparently fell backwards and hit his head, either on the train or the cobbled road.

According to police sources, the man was very drunk at the time of the accident.
He was taken to Nicosia General Hospital and immediately sent into theatre, where it was discovered that he had a blood clot in his brain. The next day he died.
Following an autopsy, state coroner Eleni Antoniou determined that the cause of death was a fractured skull and brain injury.
