Police catch armed bank robbers

FOUR ARMED Sudanese men who robbed the Mammari Co-op of £20,000 yesterday morning, were caught by police and kept in remand.

A police spokesman yesterday said, “At around 8.40 (yesterday) morning, three persons wearing black balaclavas and the first holding a pistol, the second a shotgun and the third a knife, entered a Co-op bank in Mammari and stole the amount of around £20,000”.
At the time, there were two cashiers in the shop and one customer.

According to the police spokesman, “after they managed to immobilise the customer, they demanded and took from the cashier the money that was kept in the safe and bank’s tills”.
After receiving the call, police arrived in Mammari, along with the police helicopter, and after a short pursuit caught a car with four Sudanese passengers, three of which had Cypriot residency.

They were arrested and remanded, where they later admitted to the crime and led police to a field where they had hidden the money, along with the weapons used during the robbery.
All four men were Mammari residents and according to eye witnesses and village residents, they had owed money to various convenient stores and kiosks.

As one owner said, one of the Sudanese men had told him that he would be settling his bill by Friday at the latest.
