The History of Love

Nicole Krauss

The Sunday Times recommends this book for summer reading and I would have to a gree with them. A gentle book, the History of Love examines, well, love.

Central to the story are the lives of 14-year-old Alma and an old Polish immigrant who lives on the other side of New York. How there lives intertwine is the conclusion of what can be a slow read; more of a lazy river than a roller coaster but impressive nonetheless.
Alma, while trying to find romance for her widowed mother stumbles across a book written decades before that was a gift from her father. Its main character is also called Alma and the real Alma sets out to track down the one in the book. Far from finding love for her mother, she sets out understanding its finer points for itself.

A tale of romance, brotherly love, unrequited love, misunderstood love, this is a great read.
