Pupil arrest

A 16-YEAR-OLD PUPIL was arrested in the early hours last Sunday after being caught in possession of three ecstasy pills in the tourist area of Paphos. Members of the Drug Squad (YKAN) Unit in Paphos had received a tip that a 17-year-old and 16-year-old were walking around Paphos with ecstasy pills. One of the boys was later picked up by police and formally charged with being in possession of an illegal substance at the local station.

Larnaca fires

POLICE IN Aradhippou are looking into what caused a fire that destroyed a mechanic’s garage in the Larnaca suburb at around midday last Sunday. The fire caused around £10,000 worth of damage to the garage and almost destroyed the neighboring house of the 40-year-old owner of the warehouse. Around 30 motorcycles, parked outside the warehouse, were also damaged in the fire.

Meanwhile, a burning cigarette is believed to be the cause of a fire that razed an area in the Kryo Nero area of Larnaca later that day. Fire Service Officials as well as police officers and Games Service officials were summoned to the scene after the fire destroyed ten donums of wild shrubs.

Weever attack

A man was in hospital on Sunday morning after being attacked by a weever fish just off the coast of Paralimni.

Members of the Coast Guard were alerted to the tourist after a distress call was sent and they rushed to his aid. He was later taken Paralimni Hospital were he was treated at the emergency ward and released.

Medical experts say that if you stand on a weever fish or prick yourself on its spikes then you must run the affected area under hot water which should neutralise the poison it injects. If you do not, then the pain and swelling could last for several months.

Weevers are up to 37 cm, mainly brown and have poisonous spines on their first dorsal fin and gills.

During the day, they bury themselves in sand, just showing their eyes, and snatch prey as it comes past, which mainly consists of shrimps and small fish.

Drink driving

FIFTY-FIVE people across the island were charged with drink driving over the weekend in an ongoing police clampdown. Two were arrested for causing an accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Thirty-one cases were recorded in Nicosia, with the worst being two separate incidents involving a 51- and 53-year-old who were nearly four times over the legal blood alcohol limit.

The Famagusta District was next in the roll of shame, with ten cases reported, including a 44-year-old man who was found to have 85mg – again almost four times over the legal limit of 22mg.

Motorcycle accidents

TRAFFIC POLICE in Larnaca and Limassol are looking into two separate motorcycle accidents motorists list control of the bikes. At around 3.30am yesterday morning, a 17-year-old was seriously injured when he fell off his motorbike on the Larnaca–Dhekelia road. He was rushed to Larnaca General Hospital where he was kept under observation.

On Sunday evening, an 84-year-old man was seriously hurt when he fell off his motorbike on the Limassol roundabout. He was also taken to Limassol General Hospital and kept under observation.

Assault on woman

A 20-YEAR-OLD woman reported to the Strovolos police yesterday that at two am on Sunday a 25-year old man attacked and struck her, causing her bodily harm. The woman was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where she was held for treatment. Strovolos police are investigating the case.
