Man remanded for beating girlfriend

A RUSSIAN man was yesterday detained for two days on suspicion of beating up his girlfriend.

According to the investigator in the case, Constable Michalis Petsas, the 25-year-old suspect had arrived on the island with his girlfriend, who is also Russian, around ten days ago after living together for just over a year in Russia.

“Last Sunday, a woman had come to the police station in Strovolos and was in considerable distress,” said Petsas.

“She told us that her boyfriend had beaten her up, so we arranged an ambulance to take her to Nicosia General Hospital. Doctors confirmed that she had been severely beaten around the face and body. Her boyfriend was later arrested and charged.”

According to the suspect who was questioned at the station, he had gone to visit his girlfriend, who was staying at a separate apartment, and walked into her bedroom only to find her naked in bed with another man.

The man quickly got dressed and ran outside the apartment before the suspect turned his ire on his estranged lover and proceeded to punch her in the face and around the body.

According to police officers, he confessed to attacking her on the spur of the moment but denies anything more than that.

The prosecution had requested that the suspect be held in remand for four days but after objections from the defence, Judge Natalia Talaridou ruled that two days would be enough for the police’s preliminary investigations.
