Cyprus women protest attack on Lebanon

SCORES of women gathered at Eleftheria Square yesterday evening in protest against Israel’s ongoing attack against Lebanon.

The gathering was organised by women’s NGOs on the island, POGO, Protoporia, GODISY, GODIK, the Socialist Women’s Movement of EDEK, the Philanthropic and Educational Organisation for Women and GOED as well as the unions of DEOK and SEK.

Both male and female students painted pictures depicting casualties of war while others collected money for the thousands of victims of the Lebanon war.

Onlookers also got the chance to sign a petition condemning the war in Lebanon and calling for Israel to “cease its cruel and relentless attack on Lebanon and its children.”

Apart from offering its support to the victims of Lebanon and Palestine, the protestors were also calling for the United Nations “to intervene and to stop the criminal and bloody trail being left behind Israel’s military movements in the Middle East.”

The protestors added that they too shared the pain of the Lebanon war victims having “being made refugees themselves from the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.”

Protester Marina Irakleous told the Cyprus Mail, “What is happening is totally scandalous. Israel is being allowed to get away with whatever it wants yet again. But this time it has had tragic consequences on so many innocent people. This injustice has to stop.”
