CYPRIOTS eat an average of 110 kilos of meat per year, far exceeding recommended allowances and increasing the risk of developing potentially life-threatening conditions, experts warned yesterday.

In addition to large quantities of meat, Cypriots on average also consume 105 litres of pasteurised milk and 17 kilos of cheese per year.

Failure of Paphos Cycle Paths

THE PAPHOS Municipality has decided to abolish a pilot programme introduced in 2005 which involved the construction of a 2,500 metre long bicycle path.

Savvas Savva, an engineer for the Municipality, confirmed yesterday that the “paths will be demolished, or they will stop being used”.

Veto threat more effective than its use

THE threat of vetoing Turkey’s accession course is more effective than the actual exercise of a veto, Foreign Minster George Lillikas said yesterday.

Lillikas made the comment during a joint news conference in Athens with his Greek counterpart Dora Bakoyanni, when asked by reporters if Cyprus might use its veto against Turkey in the next stage of Ankara’s accession course.

THE House Health Committee was yesterday adamant that Limassol’s municipal pool stay closed after recent water sample tests showed elevated levels of bacteria.

“They resolutely must close,” committee chairwoman Eleni Theocharous said.
