Take Seven Mascaras

A mascara is a mascara, right? Well yes and no. Many seem to give more or less a similar result. Although if you want one that achieves a specific result, such as building up short lashes or giving a natural look to naturally long lashes, then it’s worth finding the right one for you. I find most mascaras nowadays don’t smudge or flake off, so have commented simply on the effect and look they achieve on the lashes.

Est?e Lauder Lash Xl
Lengthens lashes very effectively as you build it up without that heavy body building or clogged feeling of some mascaras. I like the way it keeps lashes quite separate and natural looking and doesn’t stick them together at the roots or the tips. It doesn’t over deposit product on lashes as you apply. Great for short lashes and close up photography work!

Estee Lauder Magnascopic
I call this the fat juicy lashes mascara and use it a lot for shoots. It gives extra long, thicker looking lashes. Good for thin, wispy or sparse lashes or anyone who wants a glamorous look. Builds volume at the base of lashes to give a thicker eyelashes look.

M.a.c. Zoom Lash
Lifts and separates is a good description for this mascara. Lengthens lashes well and has a thickening effect. It does tend to separate lashes into neat symmetrical ‘sections’ which is mainly due to the brush. Available in some gorgeous rich browns as well as black. Thumbs up for this one too.

Body Shop Volumising
Gives more natural looking lashes and keeps the tips tapered, not thick or cloggy at all. Builds and lengthens in a much subtler way for ladies who prefer a more natural lash look. Would suit lashes that are naturally medium to long and just need enhancing or colouring.

L’Oreal Volume Shocking
One of those white base followed by a coloured coat, extra building type mascaras. I always wondered what the point of these was. Now I know! Not for shrinking violets! The second coat (black) applicator is a tiny comb which loads the lashes with product and symmetrically groups lashes to form pointy tips which gives an almost false lashes effect. Good if you want “in yer face” lashes. Can get messy but is worth it if you want those particular results.

Maybelline Turbo Boost
Sometimes it’s not only about how long or thick your mascara makes lashes, it’s also how the brush groups or separates them, how smooth and soft the formulation dries. Somehow this mascara really worked for me when I tried it. I loved it. Which surprised me as I’m a self-confessed posh brands snob. Everything about this was perfect for me. It volumised and lengthened well while the brush gave lashes a glamorous yet naturally separated look.

Bourjois Maxi Frange
A two brushes in one extra-length giving product. I applied the creamy base, let it dry for a few seconds then applied the black coat. It performed well as it built length. It wasn’t messy or cloggy at all and it lengthened my lashes more than any other mascara I’ve used. Didn’t give me the pointed tapered tips I tend to crave, but I would still recommend it. Separated lashes neatly and gave a glam, almost false, fluttery lashes look.
