North launches land commission

THE TURKISH Cypriot authorities yesterday announced the formation of a property commission that, if accepted as legitimate by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), could soon be handling Greek Cypriot applications for the reinstatement of properties in the north.

LEGAL circles in Cyprus are locking horns over the decision by some 1,000 Greek Cypriot refugees to appeal a European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision last December that said redress should be sought with a compensation commission under the breakaway regime.

EC opens probe into CY plan

THE EUROPEAN Commission yesterday raised doubts about Cyprus Airways (CY) restructuring plan and is opening a formal investigation, it said yesterday.

In a statement from Brussels, the Commission said the plan, which was submitted to them in November last year by the government, might violate rules prohibiting state aid to enterprises.

Car chase

A DRAMATIC car-chase, reminiscent of an action film, took place yesterday afternoon on the Nicosia-Rizoelia-Dhekelia highway.

It all began when two men aged 30 and 22 from Ayios Georgios Acheritou failed to stop when police waved them down for a routine check, instead driving off at high speed. Sirens blaring, the police car pursued them.

Supervisor needed to inspect planes

A BILL to implement an officer to supervise the worthiness of airplanes has been unanimously approved at the House Communications Committee.

The bill, which was also approved by officials of the legal services and civil aviation, notes that an officer be placed to specifically supervise the inspection of all aircrafts to see if they are airworthy or not.

Tourist get eclipse glasses

THE CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (CTO) is to distribute special glasses to all tourists arriving on the island as of Monday so that visitors can view the total eclipse of the sun on March 29.

The coverage of the sun will be 95 per cent and visible in Cyprus, which will require special glasses for anyone wanting to view it without damaging their sight.

‘Turkey headed for clash over protocol’

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos repeated yesterday that Turkey must fulfil its obligations to the EU under the customs union protocol as a BBC analysis warned that Ankara was heading for a clash with the bloc over the issue.

Turkish Cypriot man fined for trying to return old books to owner

A TURKISH Cypriot man was yesterday fined £700 by a Nicosia District Court for not declaring an old book, belonging to a Greek Cypriot refugee, to the Antiquities Department.

The case, which is the first of its kind in the Cypriot courts, saw 71-year-old Birol Hasan plead guilty to two charges and was fined £700 for the first charge without being fined for the second charge.
