THE DISAPPEARANCE of Terrence Calton is certainly a head-scratcher.
Was he man of mystery for whom disappearance was just par for the course; was he just a normal man who got bored with life in Cyprus and without telling anyone moved back to England or somewhere else; is he a man who had terrible accident and is yet to be found; or is he in fact just a non-existent character placed on the missing persons’ list of the police website by some sort of embarrassing mistake?
What little description there is of Terrence Calton on the official police website is that he was aged 60 when he disappeared, is a British national, was last seen on October 24, 2004, owned a Red Daewoo Saloon car registration EBK 367 and his last known address was 1 Amazoniou Street in Oroklini.
But a trip down to Oroklini bore no fruit.
Neighbours and even locals who know the ins and outs of the village had never heard of anyone called Terrence Calton.
It turned out that 1 Amazoniou Street was in fact a block of flats. An elderly man who had lived in the block of flats since 1990 had no recollection of Calton ever living in the building.
“I have been living here for years and I don’t remember any man of that description.” Neighbours also knew nothing.
Police officials were no more help. The police official responsible for supervising the missing person’s list at the Police press headquarters, simply told the Sunday Mail, “I have no idea about this person. I just put the names on the list. I have no idea what’s going on with the investigations into what happened to them.
“You should send a letter to the Chief of Police if you would like an answer.”
There are 39 people on the missing persons’ list, some dating back to 1990. Some, like the case of Terrence Calton, seem unfathomable. Others are more easily explained, like the people who fell off boats and were never seen again.
But even such cases are kept open. There is no time lapse for missing persons to be declared dead, the officer said. When asked what would happen if somebody had been missing for 200 years, she simply replied, “I don’t know.”
The general procedure is to report a missing person to the local police station, something believed to have been done at Oroklini police station on the case of Calton.
But police at Oroklini did not have a clue about his disappearance or of anyone around the time of his disappearance. A local constable even went through the logbook during the days he was allegedly reportedly, but found nothing.
Neither was his name found on the computer database at the local community hall.
The British High Commission is currently looking into whether or not relatives of Calton have contacted them in Nicosia.
FOR relatives to declare a missing person dead, they need to contact the Attorney-general’s Office. According to an official of the Legal Services, if somebody has been missing for a certain time, regardless of how long, then a claim for a death certificate can be filed by letter. That letter would then be reviewed by the Attorney-general himself and an answer would be given if it is approved or not.
According to the same official, the Attorney-general’s office usually deals with individuals that have been missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion and not with individuals that have been missing in the last ten years.
