Race Club urges government rethink on plan to open up betting to foreign races

THE NICOSIA Race Club said yesterday the racing industry in Cyprus was in danger of dying out if the government went ahead with a plan to amend the gambling law.

Marketing Manager George Hadjiminas told the Cyprus Mail that, “we have sent the government a letter expressing our concerns and very much hope that they will take our views into consideration.”

Shipping firm to fund University Chair

COLUMBIA Shipmanagement is financing a Chair in Strategic Management at the University of Cyprus’ Department of Public and Business Administration, it has been announced.

The Campaign Manager of the University’s Development Office wouldn’t reveal the exact amount of the donation but said it was enough to finance a full professor’s chair for five years.

When Abba interrupts a trial

A TRIAL in Nicosia suffered a bizarre interruption yesterday as the catchy tune of ‘Dancing Queen’ by Swedish band Abba began blaring from the phone of a defence lawyer.

A woman was on trial accused of stealing money from a cash till at a supermarket she used to work for, when the tune suddenly started blaring out.

Suspect sheep herd to be culled as a precaution

VETERINARY authorities said yesterday they would cull sheep in one herd after an outbreak of scrapie now being investigated for links with the brain-wasting mad cow disease.

The European Commission has ordered further tests on sheep in Cyprus and France after scrapie diagnosed in three samples carried an unusual molecular profile.

RSPCA speaks out against ‘barbaric act of cruelty’

BRITAIN’S Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) yesterday issued a press release on the brutal killing of a stray dog by soldiers in Cyprus.

“The RSPCA is shocked and appalled by the reports of this barbaric act of cruelty,” the statement said.

Ombudswoman fury at treatment of Turkish Cypriot property enquiries

OMBUDSWOMAN Iliana Nicolaou has lashed the government for giving the runaround to Turkish Cypriots inquiring about the status and value of their land in the free areas.

Nicolaou’s office was alerted to several cases where Turkish Cypriots owning land in the south areas before 1974 wrote to the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties only to receive vague answers and generalities.
