‘It’s time to scrap road tax’

DIKO deputy Nicos Pittokopitis yesterday called on political parties to show their true colours and take a stand on the abolition of road tax, to be replaced by a three-cents-per-litre surcharge for fuel consumption.

Pittokopitis, who also chairs the House Communications Committee, will today be re-tabling his draft bill for scrapping the levy.

Ombudswoman demands halt to deportation plans

THE Ombudswoman has requested that immigration halt its plans to deport a Serbian mother of two whom they detained on Tuesday and submit the woman’s files to the Ombudswoman’s office for examination.

Jasmina Drazic was separated from her 17-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter on Tuesday by authorities because she had overstayed her visa after they refused to renew it.

CYPRUS Airways (CY) may be heading towards a new crisis as disgruntled pilots meet today to discuss the situation in the airline, which they describe as a shambles.

Cyprus eyes Blue Flag for 49 beaches

FORTY-NINE beaches across the island have applied for a Blue Flag, the stamp of approval by the European beach regulator, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Last year, Cyprus had 48 Blue Flag beaches, which met the 27 different criteria needed to fly the EU quality symbol.

Animal rights activists condemn ‘appalling acts’

THE Cyprus Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA) yesterday held a press conference condemning the recent torture and killing of a dog by National Guard Conscripts.

On Friday night the private television station Sigma aired a clip of the mobile video footage, which showed the helpless dog racing about and howling in agony to the laughter and singing of soldiers.
