Rubbish disgrace

Sir,
It was truly amazing to read that nine out of 10 Cyprus tourists are “very happy” with the environment (Cyprus Mail, February 2). One wonders if they ventured beyond their hotels, since without travelling far in Cyprus one can encounter piles of every sort of rubbish – even in the most remote spot there are discarded stoves, fridges, furniture, vehicles and dead animals. It is so disappointing when on a walk or drive in the country to see such a disgusting mess. Where are the recycling facilities and penalties for dumping?  How long before the EU starts to levy fines for the lack of any recycling? If there really is a move to encourage more upmarket tourism, this is one of areas that must be tackled.
