Sir,
Licence to annoy more like, given the numerous and endless list of complaints about poor roads, smoky double cabins, virtual non enforcement of traffic laws other than derisory speed traps when youths accompanied by scantily dressed Miss Impunity chase up and down Grivas Dighenis all night in souped up pseudo-dragsters.
Offences are rife and increasing in number given the incredulous size of most of the four wheel drive monsters driven unoccupied but for the driver to swank around this little place by these speed drugged youth’s parents, mostly plump mums with nothing better to do. Soon town roads will be parked beyond access and then tempers will flare and road rage ensue. Indescriminate parking on pavements and double yellow lines goes unpunished, delivery vehicles, indifferent to other road users, jut dangerously out into the main road, aggresive drivers edge impatiently at traffic lights beyond, or even worse, across the white line thus blocking the path of courageous pedestrians, invariably non Cypriot, who take their lives in their hands when negotiating our risibly parked up patchy pavements. Pedestrians attempting to cross a main road while half of the oncoming vehicles negotiate U turns or are themselves crossing over to the other side to park at the periptera or bakery, facing oncoming traffic with their headlights beaming.
Oh God or Ethnarch (whichever the greater), save us from this mindlessness – or is it selfishness, or anarchy permitted reign due to police ineptitude. And we read in both Sunday’s and Tuesday’s Mail about our government’s good intentions to curb this madness. Poppycock, that lot couldn’t organise a piss up at a brewery, funded or not!
For a start, let ’em try to stop these crazed youths on Dighenis – I bet they couldn’t – and why not? ‘Cause they’re scared of ’em, that’s why!
Noise is ‘The’ Modern Pollutant and by far the most serious of today’s man inflicted diseases – curb it on our town roads and building sites or say nothing, this being our government’s response to this invidious problem as well as to most other traffic problems. Nothing I mean! Yet our beloved potato farmers, quite the best potatoes in the world, can bring traffic to a standstill overnight. Something wrong here somewhere….? Mash ’em and even toothless, uncommitted politicians can swallow ’em!
