Division would be a disaster

I AM not sure that D. Pavlou’s suggestion that Cyprus be divided up like England and Scotland is a particularly good idea (Letters February 14).

At the moment Scottish MPs have the right to vote on English laws, but English MPs cannot vote on the laws in Scotland. It is a problem known as the West Lothian Question.

Checkpoint bird flu measures to be lifted next week

AGRICULTURE Minister Timis Efthymiou yesterday confirmed prevention measures implemented at the Green Line checkpoints to stop the spread of bird flu would be lifted next week.

Additional measures established within a 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the initial outbreak in the occupied areas would be lifted on the same day, he said.

Young men pay £1,000 for illegal hare

TWO YOUNG men from the Nicosia village of Tseri were in court yesterday where they pleaded guilty to charges of illegal hunting and being in possession of a dangerous weapon.

One of the men’s father was also charged for not properly concealing the weapon his son had taken without his permission.

Ledra talks offer news to Iacovou

THE GOVERNMENT said yesterday it had not been officially informed that the Turkish Cypriot side might be willing to dismantle the controversial bridge that has prevented the opening of Ledra Street.

On Tuesday Turkish Cypriot Mayor for Nicosia north, Kutlay Erk, signalled that they might be willing to remove the bridge it built at the proposed crossing in the Green Line.

LTV in deal with miVision

THE STOCK Exchange has suspended the trading of shares in Multichoice (Cyprus) Public Company Ltd for the second day running after LTV was reported to have reached a deal with the board of CyTA to manage the miVision platform from 2006. The deal is said to be at a minimum fee of £2.5 million per year.
