Straw delivers Cyprus diatribe

BRITISH FOREIGN Secretary Jack Straw has accused the government of unacceptably using EU membership to solve the Cyprus problem and of deliberately marginalising the Turkish Cypriots.

The comments, made during a House of Commons session on Tuesday are sure to spark another political furore on the island and further damage already strained relations between Cyprus and Britain.

Sir,
I cannot believe the attitude of the pilots’ union. I travel to Cyprus frequently and always prefer to use Cyprus Airways. But am I going to book my next flight with CY knowing that the flight may be subject to the ‘action’ of these guys?

I don’t think so! I’ll use another airline.

I am an Australian, born of Greek Cypriot parents. I have been watching the tennis and did not realise that Marcos was from Cyprus until later. I enjoyed watching him and found him a refreshing character, as did most Australians. When I found  out  he was from Cyprus I was elated for your country and my heritage.

‘CY won’t survive any more strikes’

CYPRUS Airways (CY) chairman Lazaros Savvides yesterday asked pilots to call off their strike today, warning that if the airline’s rescue package was not implemented smoothly it would lead to closure of the company.

Picking up the pieces after Pyla tornado

PYLA was yesterday assessing the damage after a tornado passed through the area on Tuesday morning.

The Secretary of Pyla Council, Stavros Stavrou said that, “roughly 50 homes have been affected, with slate blown off roofs and windows smashed. Cars were also damaged, and water tanks have been completely destroyed. Trees were also upended in the carnage.

Ambassador’s trial adjourned

THE trial of Cyprus’ former Ambassador to Sweden was yesterday adjourned, after the prosecution requested time to review some of the charges, which they claimed “posed some problems”.

Most of the 26 charges levelled against Costas Papadimas are related to sexual harassment claims made by two female employees and a diplomat at the embassy in Stockholm.

Teachers arrested for illegal lessons

TWO teachers were arrested at their home yesterday for providing illegal private lessons to their state school students.

Police told the Cyprus Mail yesterday that at 5.45pm, Nicosia police bearing a court order investigated the home of two state school teachers. The police found the teachers tutoring two students in mathematics and physics.

Man jailed for attempted rape

A MAN of 45 was jailed for five years for kidnapping and attempting to rape a woman from Nicosia.

Andreas Costa Demou, alias Blackis, had confessed to charges of kidnap, assault and attempted rape. Yesterday, he told Judge Lemonia Kaoutzanis that he was sorry for what he ha done and that his behaviour was due to his frequent alcohol and drug problem.

Turkish Cypriot teachers sue government over Limassol school

THE CYPRIOT Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTOS) will today begin a legal battle against the Republic of Cyprus over what it says is a violation of Turkish Cypriot community’s right to administer its own educational establishments within the Republic.
