Lions making a spectacle of charity

DO YOU any old eyeglasses sitting around the house? The Cyprus Lions Club would like to relieve you of them and ship them off to third-world nations in Africa and Asia to make the world a better – and crisper – place for someone who cannot afford a pair of glasses.

Under the motto “useless for you, necessary for others” the Lions Club is collecting glasses for near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism, as well as sunglasses.

At a press conference on Monday, the Cyprus Lions Club said that this initiative by the Lions could give the opportunity to millions of people to improve their sight and lives, as a pair of glasses in some countries is equivalent to a fortune.

The glasses will be mailed to the various third-world nations through Cyprus Airways.

Glasses can be deposited at donation boxes located at Laiki Bank branches and other spaces like certain superstores and schools.

This is not the first time Cyprus has sent glasses abroad. Until now, through the Lions’ efforts in Cyprus, 55,000 pairs of various types of glasses have been sent abroad.

The effort is part of a larger programme by Lions Club called “SightFirst”, launched by the Lions in 1989 to battle preventable blindness.

The Lions have restored sight to 4.6 million people through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss for 20 million people and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions.

According to the Lions, about every $6 donated has resulted in person having vision restored or being saved from blindness.
