Call centre robbery

AROUND £5,000 in various currencies was taken in a robbery at a call centre in Limassol yesterday. Three thieves went to the call centre, which was manned only by one 44-year old female employee, and demanded she hand over all the cash. They then fled the scene. Police said the robbery had been well planned and that the culprits, who are believed to be foreigners, had deliberately waited for the lunchtime lull in business and staffing levels. They got away with £1,550, £2020 sterling, 1,200 euro and $1,000.

Roads contract

THE LARNACA Municipality has signed a £300,000 contract to have the town’s road network completely reconstructed with asphalt. There is a possibility that the Urban Planning Department and the Provincial Administration will also contribute so that the Turkish Cypriot areas will also be included, which will raise the project financial expenses even more. The reconstructions will begin just as soon as the weather permits it and there is no danger of possible rain which could damage the works. The hopes are that that works will be finished by Easter so that no problems will be presented in traffic during the holidays.

Help for poor

Trade Union SEK has requested that the government move to put into effect certain compensative measures to help protect the financially and socially weaker groups of the people due to the impending increase in VAT on foods, medicines and property. SEK has asked the government to grant generous benefits to those that need it so as to ensure the existence and quality of life for all the population. At the same time, they have also requested that the Finance Ministry meet and start discussing ways to lower tax rates and increase tax-free sums in accordance with the proposals that were recently submitted Trade Union PEO.
