Simerini indulges in some schoolyard politics:

‘BRITAIN IS provoking the Cyprus Republic, a European Union by sending her Foreign Minister into an independent and sovereign state in order to speak with the leader of a breakaway and occupied part of Cypriot territory.
It ignores and disrespects the sensitivities of the country that will host him and tramples on diplomatic protocols and international resolutions which do not recognise the entity of the pseudostate.

By this action Britain is finished as a mediator and a guarantor power for Cyprus.
The Cyprus government simply watches the British neo-colonial behaviour and is satisfied that the President will not see Straw, without at the same time declaring Straw as an undesirable.

The reaction of the political parties is just as ineffective. They verbally condemn the provocation but they did not have enough courage to mobilise the people.

And the people? They watch indifferently. Dozy and apathetic, they don’t grasp the humiliation that is being perpetrated at their expense of their armchair fatalism.

The government with its gutless attitude and the parties with their innate inability to inspire, have failed to guide public opinion. But also the people? Where they are the refugees? Where they are the young people? Where are the Cypriot people that they don’t go out into the street and surround the airport to stop the “Insolent Englezos” from entering the territory of the Cyprus Republic?

This place does not have government. It does not have political parties. It does not have people. Straw will be received by a general indifference and go to the north undisturbed and enter the ‘presidential palace’ to meet the aggressor.

He will not meet any demonstrator on his path, nor one Cypriot that will express his repulsion and protest. The good and compliable child will enter a new chapter and worse will follow. Straw will pave for further humiliations. It’s just a matter of time.’
