Young men return home

THE TWO young men who allege they were severely beaten by police after being pulled over in the early hours of Monday morning during a routine ID check last night returned to their homes with bruises all over their body and their left hands in a cast.

Upon being pulled over, the 27-year old driver, Marcos Papageorgiou, apparently refused to comply with the request to hand over his driver’s licence after requesting to see ID from the plainclothes policemen.

Papageorgiou was released from Nicosia General Hospital last night, while the 27-year old passenger Yianni Nikolaou was released from the clinic Evangelistria on Tuesday. Both have bruises and their left hands are in casts.

The police claim that the young man struck the policemen after refusing to hand over their identification.

United Democrats claim that the action by the police was “a violation of basic human rights” and an “affront on human dignity”, adding that it was “characteristic” that the police asked the state pathologist to examine the four policemen for their injuries but refused to allow him to examine the actual victims.

“We are calling upon the Attorney General to take action and take punitive action.”
The chief of Police Tassos Panayiotou is investigating the allegations.
