TONIGHT IS New Year’s Eve, the most popular night out of the year. But for women across the capital, the festive excitement has been marred by the recent spate of masked attacks.
LIBRA Holidays Group (LHG), is considering legal action to recoup a £5 million loss the group sustained as a result of the Helios Airways crash last August in which 121 people were killed.
Helios is owned by LHG, one of the biggest UK-based tour operators, which bought the airline late last year. LHG is also listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE).
Consumers asked to be careful at bill-time on New Year’s Eve
THE CONSUMERS’ Association has warned the public to be extra vigilant if they are planning to spend New Year’s Eve out on the town.
Head of the association, Petros Markou, asked consumers to be careful when settling bills at the end of the night and to check what the prices will be beforehand.
ALMOST 300 civil servants have not submitted a list of their personal assets, despite a relevant law passed last year requiring them to do so.
The new law was supposed to sort matters once and for all, but soon degenerated into a farce when the majority of those affected failed to meet a February 28 deadline for submitting their assets.

PIRAEUS Bank is bidding for the remaining shares in Cyprus’s Euroinvestment and Finance, the Greek bank said, as required by law after recently raising its stake.
Piraeus Bank said in a stock exchange filing yesterday it would offer 25 cents for each share in Euroinvestment, which closed at 28 cents in Cyprus on Thursday.
PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday he had sent a basket with Cypriot produce to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat with good wishes for the New Year.
“I sent to him the usual basket of goods with Cypriot products that I send to the ambassadors with wishes for a good year,” said Papadopoulos.
POLICE yesterday announced that 40-year old Georgios Ballaskas will be remanded for eight days, after shooting 22-year-old Arestis Aresti from Paphos at point-blank range on Thursday night and killing him.
Ballaskas, who handed himself in to police, claims that he had shot Aresti in self-defence while the two were quarrelling.
