President : we can be ready in 48 hours

ONLY TIME will tell if efforts by authorities in the north to open the Ledra street checkpoint in Nicosia are a communication trick, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday.
He said that the opening of Ledra street was the government’s initiative and that the Greek Cypriot side has notified the UN of its readiness to open the checkpoint but the occupation forces were creating obstacles.

He explained that the government can open the checkpoint 48 hours after approval is given, noting that according to UN assessments, works that have to be done in the occupied areas need more than one-and-a-half months.

“All reservations have been coming from the Turkish side, which despite reassurances of its readiness, is never ready,” the President said.

In August, a new crossing in Zodhia opened almost overnight after Turkish Cypriot authorities grew tired of waiting for the government to prepare the southern checkpoint.
