Former AG Triantafyllides dies

FORMER Attorney General and head of the Supreme Court Michalakis Triantafyllides died yesterday morning aged 78.

Triantafyllides was born in Nicosia in 1927. After graduating from the Pancyprian Gymnasium, he studied Law at Gray`s Inn in London, and graduated in 1948.

From then until 1960 he practiced law in Nicosia. During the period 1959-1960 he was a member of the Greek Cypriot delegation to the joint Constitutional Committee, which formed the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus.

In 1960 he was appointed judge of the Supreme Constitutional Court and in 1964 judge of the Supreme Court. In 1971 he was appointed President of the Supreme Court, a position he held until 1988, when he was appointed Attorney General of the Republic.

He was also an advisor during periods of the Cyprus negotiations, and also participated in numerous meetings on the Cyprus problem in the context of talks during the period 1976 to 1985.

Triantafyllides also served on the board, as chairman or member, of Cypriot and international organisations, including the Chairman of the Oncology Centre, the Committee for the Re-establishment of Human Rights in Cyprus and President of the Council of the University of Cyprus.

Abroad he was a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Council of Europe and a member of the International Law Committee.

Political parties and organisations yesterday expressed their deep sympathies for the death of Triantafyllides. DIKO said the former Attorney-general had made an outstanding contribution to the growth of the Cyprus Republic and to the defence of its sovereignty. He had also strengthened the legal framework on which Cypriot justice was founded, the party said.
“Michalakis Triantafyllides offered an important services in various roles that were always a success and for this he gained the respect of everyone,” said DIKO
The Supreme Court also expressed its deep sadness over his death and said it would be flying its flags at half-mast.

Parliament yesterday held two minutes’ silence in memory of the great man.
