Radiomarathon gets underway

THE Radiomarathon fundraising event for children with special needs was kick-started yesterday with a series of marches and events and will continue throughout today.

The fundraiser is taking place in all the towns of non-occupied Cyprus as well as Greece, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New York and South Africa.

There will be 11 marches in Cyprus and 53 collection kiosks around the island, while 12 piggybank cars will be touring all towns and accepting donations.

The event will be supported by a number of Greek artists, including Alkisti Protopsalti, Elena Paparizou, Yiannis Vardis, Thanos Petrelis and Memos Pagnis.

All proceeds will go towards the building of a special daycare centre for people with special needs.

President Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday he was committed to making the lives of children with special needs safer and more comfortable.

The president’s wife, Photini Papadopoulou, head of the charity’s managing committee, made a plea to the Cypriot public requesting they be generous with their donations.

Kikis Lazarides, president of the Laiki Group, stressed that the Radiomarathon had ensured the inclusion of children with special needs in the running of society and had made Cypriots sensitive towards their needs.

President of the governing committee of CyBC Andreas Aloneftis expressed his wishes that this year’s Radiomarathon have even better results than last year.

AKEL, along with its deputies, staff and newspaper Haravghi donated £2,000.

The money was handed over by AKEL representative Andros Kyprianou who stressed that “it is our obligation to support children with special needs on a daily basis and help them blend in with society completely.”
