The Bay Tree

Brit food with a difference

For a pleasant meal to remind one of home, you can’t beat a Limassol hideaway

The Bay Tree is easy to find despite being hidden away in the depths of the Kanika Enaerios complex. It has an enclosed garden with tables set under seven large trees. It’s hard to believe that you are in the centre of a built up area.

The Bay Tree is run by Harry and Louise Kewin from the Isle of Man and Head Chef Declan Quigley from Dublin. Harry and Louise have had a holiday home on the island since 1989 and when the lease on their pub in the Isle of Man ran out in June 2004 they decided not to renew it. With their chef they decided it was time to make a permanent move here. The Isle of Man’s loss is definitely Cyprus’ gain.

The Manx and Irish influence is what sets this restaurant apart from most British eateries. Having an Irish chef they produce regional delicacies such as Beef Stew with Guinness and Irish Stew. The Manx Kipper Pate is certainly something different and there are
other Manx choices such as Manx kippers, Manx cheese, and Manx broth.
One of their most popular dishes is the Steak Pie with short crust pastry (£5.80). Vegetarians are also well catered for with, amongst others, Homity Pie (£4.95).

For the starter I chose the reliable Prawn and Egg Mayonnaise. The mayonnaise was light and creamy and was thickly spread over the egg. The large serving of prawns was free of the sauce, which I preferred. I do enjoy savouring the flavour of prawns without them being drenched in a heavy sauce. The accompanying salad was refreshingly different with orange and pear added.

My dining partner chose Mushrooms Provencal. There were plenty of mushrooms and he said the sauce was very tasty – I pretended not to see him wiping up the sauce with his bread!

This we followed with Chicken Breast stuffed with mozzarella cheese and sun dried tomatoes, served with mixed fresh vegetables, champ potatoes (mashed potatoes, cabbage and spring onions) – that were to die for – and deep-fried thick wedge potatoes. The chicken was lovely – tender and moist – and the filling! Well it oozed mozzarella cheese and the sun-dried tomatoes were rich in flavour.

The Cod Fillet with a julienne of vegetables and butter sauce was also well cooked – moist and served with the same vegetables as the chicken dish. The other main course options on the evening were Beef Stroganoff with pilau rice, Garlic Mushroom and Leek pasta.

I was glad I left some room for the pud. My absolute all time favourite is Banoffee Pie and I was delighted it was one of the evening choices. The home-made biscuit base was crunchy and the pie itself was what you’d expect full of banana, toffee and cream. So much for watching my waist!
The best thing about The Bay Tree is that they use fresh local products and their menu works around the fruit and vegetables of the season.
