Pharmaceutical debate

A CONFERENCE held yesterday by the Parliamentary Health Committee confirmed that there are still differences in the opinions of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Health concerning the labelling of pharmaceuticals.

It was mentioned at the conference that the EU has instructed that all its member states should label their medicines in the official language of their countries.

Attorney-general Petros Clerides also informed the Committee that the instruction is non-negotiable. He added that there is already a legislation confirming this.

Health Minister Andreas Gavrielides said the government is in talks with the European Committee and that a change of the relative legislation, in which labelling will also include English, is encouraged.

“All sides have expressed their opinions,” said the Minister, before adding “the state is more concerned about whether there are sufficient pharmaceuticals.”

Head of the Committee, Kostakis Constantinou, said parliament should adhere to the European legislations. “We believe that there should be compliance to European regulations and that the government, through discussions and procedures, should find a fitting solution to this serious problem”, he said.
