Tales from the coffeeshop

BIG UPROAR and collective beating of breasts followed the impromptu visit of deputies to a big lyceum in Larnaca, which did not have enough chairs for the students. Apparently, the students of the chairless classes were told to bring their own chairs – like they bring pencils, a sharpener, rubber and ruler.

We must wake up to the realities of power politics

AFTER WEEKS of bickering at the EU forum of permanent representatives COREPER and behind-the-scenes consultations over the draft of the counter-declaration, the Cyprus government eventually agreed on the content.

So how do you bring 10 grand pianos to Cyprus?

CYPRIOT composer Savvas Savva recently composed a concert for 10 pianos and an orchestra, an ambitious project, which according to the President of the Steinway club has never been done before. But behind the scenes was another ambitious task: bringing 10 grand pianos to Cyprus in time for the performance.

The pasta maker

WE SHOULD all feel deeply grateful to King Ferdinand of Naples.

It was he who in the 18th century called upon the best inventive minds in Italy to come up with an automated process for the making of pasta.

This was perhaps an understandable move, due to the fact that his Majesty was not entirely happy with the traditional method of mixing the semolina dough… by foot.

Do Cypriots read?

“I MUST say that I find television very educational,” Groucho Marx once said. “The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a book.” Many people think that is especially true of Cyprus, where the phrase “Cypriots don’t read” often gets bandied about with resigned acceptance.

Four generations of photography

TUCKED away in a corner of Nicosia’s Ledra Street, barely noticeable, is a shop. A photography shop at the beginning of the pedestrian street that hides a fascinating story dating back more than a century.

Far cry from Europe indeed

Sir,

On the theme of Cyprus and Europe, I would like to help satisfy L.B.’s interest in “hearing from others who have had similar experiences” (‘A little bit of Europe would help’, Letters to the Editor, September 7). Of many others, I have two current stories to relay.

Capital of chic? Dream on

Sir,

With reference to the article ‘Cyprus Chic: fact of fiction?’ (Sunday Mail, September 11), I thought that a response was appropriate.

As much as I would like to see Cyprus in the international limelight, I am afraid that it has no chance and this I would say is by choice.

Anti-social dogs

Sir

I wonder if anyone can tell me if there is a law dealing with the antisocial behaviour of dog owners?

Our neighbours keep up to half a dozen dogs at a time in a box outside their house. The animals are cooped up and bored and so bark almost constantly, day and night.
