A 74-YEAR-OLD man from Paralimni was killed in a road accident yesterday morning in the Famagusta district. Police said that around 9.45am while Antonis Hadjisolomou was driving on the road from Paralimni to Dherynia his car collided with another vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man, which resulted in a collision with a third car belonging to a foreign family with two children. According to police Hadjisolomou was trapped in his car and had to be cut free by firemen. He was taken to Paralimni hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kaimakli demining
THE UNITED Nations Development Programme’s Mine Action Centre, funded by the European Union, will start de-mining operations in a new minefield in Kaimakli area, Nicosia, on Monday, it said yesterday. This will be the fourth minefield to be cleared by the Mine Action Centre since the launch of Phase II on August 12 and 17 since the beginning of the programme in November 2004. During normal working hours from 7am to 4.30pm some road closures might be necessary for mine clearance operations, a statement said.
Armenian election
A BY-ELECTION for a new representative of the Armenian community to the House of Representatives will take place October 9, 2005. The new representative will succeed Bedros Kalaydjian, who died last week aged 71. Candidacies must be submitted to the Chief Returning Officer by September 26. The Ministry of Interior calls upon all Armenian Cypriots who will be 18 before or on October 9 to register at their district offices to be able to vote. The three religious groups, belonging to the Greek Cypriot community, Latins, Armenians and Maronites, elect a representative each to the House as an observer.

FOR THE fifth time in six years Banker Magazine has voted Bank of Cyprus as the island’s “Bank of the Year’. The award was given on the back of significant improvement in the bank’s profitability indicators as a result of cost-cutting, together with the increased income in Cyprus and Greece where profits have increased 17 per cent. Group Chief General manager Yiannis Kypri accepted the award for the bank at a special ceremony that took place in London.
