Extra set of eyes destined for cities’ traffic lights

SECRET cameras are set to be fitted to traffic lights in various locations around Cyprus in a move the Traffic Department hopes will reduce road accidents considerably.

The aim of these electronic eyes is to capture motorists who are speeding and who disobey the traffic signals.

Lillikas: I can demand lower fuel costs if need be

COMMERCE Minister George Lillikas has said that he will not hesitate to issue a decree in which he will demand lower oil prices, if the Advisory Committee comes up with evidence that does not justify the current prices set by companies.

Lillikas added that if prices are unjustifiably high, in accord of the law, he has the right to intervene.

CYPRUS’ GROWING Jewish community will on Monday inaugurate the first synagogue on the island for decades, marking a milestone in the history of Jewry in Cyprus. The synagogue is being opened in Larnaca.

Jobless rise

CYPRUS’ jobless rose to 3.6 per cent of the population in August compared to 3.4 per cent in July with new graduates entering the labour market, the statistics department said.

Numerically the number of unemployed applying for benefit stood at 12,622 people, it said.

Road death

A 74-YEAR-OLD man from Paralimni was killed in a road accident yesterday morning in the Famagusta district. Police said that around 9.45am while Antonis Hadjisolomou was driving on the road from Paralimni to Dherynia his car collided with another vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man, which resulted in a collision with a third car belonging to a foreign family with two children.
