Total lack of objectivity

Sir,
Once again, the Cyprus Mail’s lack of objectivity was highlighted last week (Cyprus Mail, July 22, “Abuse of history just deepens the divide”).

Indeed, you criticise the Greek Cypriots’ warranted remembrance of the horrors of July 1974, yet you conveniently fail to mention the insulting celebrations in the occupied areas of Cyprus involving officials from Turkey, as well as numerous tanks, fighter jets, and military helicopters.

You claim the sirens at 5.30am and discussions and documentaries in the
government-controlled areas “maintain a state of patriotic mobilisation”.

Without a doubt, an unprejudiced newspaper would at least question the offensive parade of M48 tanks in the Turkish pseudo-state. Moreover, balanced reporting would not ignore comments made by Abdullah Gul and Mehmet Ali Talat praising Turkey for its illegal “peace operation”.

Surely such provocative actions and insensitive attitudes are more damaging than a speech condemning the unlawful invasion or a memorial service for the dead!
