Car sales down on last year

THE total registrations of motor vehicles during the first six months of 2005 decreased by five per cent to 25,486, compared to the same period in 2004.

According to the Statistical Service, which has issued a Registration of Motor Vehicles report for the period January-June 2005, private saloon cars decreased by 6.4 per cent. Of the total private saloon cars, 9,095 vehicles or 47.1 per cent were new and 52.9 per cent (10,231) were used vehicles.

Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 9.7 per cent compared to the same period last year, while light goods vehicles decreased by 4.4 per cent and heavy goods vehicles decreased by 26 per cent.

Mechanised cycles decreased by 1.9 per cent to 2,210 in 2005, compared to 2,253 in January-June 2004.
