Two held after man killed by falling wall

TWO Nicosia men were yesterday remanded in custody for two days in connection with the wrongful death of their 28-year-old friend.

The court heard that the incident happened at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, near a parking lot on Apollonos Street in the old town of Nicosia.
The first suspect, a bar owner on the same street, lit a fire in the parking lot to burn rubbish.

The lot was previously a house, which collapsed, leaving only one wall standing.
The edge of the wall borders an abandoned house.

Police and the fire service were notified about the fire, which was put out immediately.
The suspect received a warning from police who left the scene while the fire service remained to make sure the fire was not still burning.

During this time, the suspect called a friend and together they started trying to demolish the wall, which was ready to collapse.

The second suspect climbed on the roof of the abandoned house and from there he pushed the wall.

Throughout this time the victim, a friend of the two suspects, stood there and watched the whole process.

Suddenly, a part of the abandoned house fell on the man’s head causing him heavy injury.

He was rushed to hospital, where he died shortly before midnight despite doctors’ efforts.

The two men were arrested in the early morning hours.
