Thieves in action
TURKISH Cypriot police are searching for suspects in connection with three incidents of burglary that took place in the north over the past week. According to police reports, valuables were stolen from the Nicosia home of Huseyin Depreli, 300 New Turkish Lira were stolen from Vili Hairdressers in Nicosia and the home of Aziz Soyalan in Lapithos was also burgled.
Free money
A BLANK cheque lost by Feryal Yenice was retrieved by fraudsters who went on to spend spent 558 New Turkish Lira at a local petrol station on Thursday. In a separate incident, thieves who found a lost credit card belonging to Ceyhun Araz, shopped in various places in Nicosia, spending nearly 800 New Turkish Lira. Police in the north are investigating the incidents.
Arms find
AN UNLICENSED handgun, two cartridges, 175 live bullets and 14 empty bullet shells were found in a raid by Turkish Cypriot Police at the home of a 64 year Morphou man on Tuesday. The man was arrested for further questioning.
Short break
A PRISONER who escaped from Nicosia north Central Prison escaped at 5.30pm on Thursday, only to be caught again an hour later. Sabahattin Ilhan found the opportunity to escape after prison guards ordered him to take evening meals to Syrian prisoners in an adjoining building. Police and prison guards found Ilhan a few metres away at a gas facility after a brief search.
Critical fall
25-YEAR-OLD construction worker Mustafa Al plunged to the ground after losing his balance while repairing the roof of a two storied building in Trikomo, on Thursday afternoon. Al, who was seriously injured, was taken to Nicosia State Hospital where he is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Left alone
A THREE year-old girl, Kardalen Tutar, was seriously burned and is in a critical condition after she was left unattended and set her clothes alight while playing with fire in the kitchen of her Prastio home on Thursday. Tutar is receiving treatment for third degree burns at the Nicosia north General Hospital.
Airport detention
A 23 year-old Iranian national was arrested by Turkish Cypriot Police for trying to enter Tymbou Airport using a passport belonging to someone else on Wednesday evening.
Heroin seized
THREE LORRY drivers from Turkey were arrested after Turkish Cypriot Police seized two kilograms of heroin they smuggled in through the Kyrenia port on June 8. The heroin was seized while it was being transferred from one driver to another in a raid on Wednesday. In a hearing at the Nicosia north District Court on Thursday, the three were ordered to be held for three days in custody.
