Further to the excellent article written by Dr Tim Potier in your paper of June 15, I find it remarkable that some of our politicians express such surprise at the recent referendum results. The concept of European Union is a very laudable goal and it is understandable how it came into being after the horrific wars of the 20th century that created such carnage for its people in two world wars.

President travels

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos will begin a visit to London on July 26, following an invitation by British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Papadopoulos said in Brussels where he is attending the EU summit that he would also visiting Paris on November 4 at the invitation of his French counterpart Jacques Chirac.

Thieves in action

TURKISH Cypriot police are searching for suspects in connection with three incidents of burglary that took place in the north over the past week. According to police reports, valuables were stolen from the Nicosia home of Huseyin Depreli, 300 New Turkish Lira were stolen from Vili Hairdressers in Nicosia and the home of Aziz Soyalan in Lapithos was also burgled.

STAFF AT the airports’ duty-free shops returned to work yesterday after agreeing to suspend strike measures pending a new round of negotiations on July 4.

The decision to return to work after six consecutive days of industrial action was taken at a general assembly of the workers early yesterday.

A CYPRIOT website yesterday followed up on a report naming a UK-based company that was promising investors astronomical returns on the purchase of land near the site of a proposed new golf course in Larnaca.

Earlier in the week Stockwatch (www.stockwatch.com.cy) had run a story saying the company, Investors Provident, also dealt in real estate development in the occupied areas.
