Injunction freezes Melkonian closure decision

THE ARMENIAN Patriarch of Constantinople and Turkey, Mesrob Mutafyan, has filed a court injunction against the AGBU to overturn the decision to close the Melkonian Educational Institute in Nicosia.

The interim order, issued on June 7, also forbids the AGBU or its agents in Cyprus from selling or developing any part of the school’s estate on the busy Limassol Avenue.

Jockeys in fight with conscripts

THREE conscripts serving at a post next to the Nicosia racetrack were injured on Tuesday evening after they got into a fight with jockeys.

The fight reportedly started after the soldiers made fun of a jockey who had been passing outside their post, next to the racetrack near the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint.

Cyprus denies it is seeking embassy in Ankara

THE government yesterday denied that it was seeking to open an embassy in Ankara following the approval of the protocol extending Turkey’s EU customs union agreement with the 10 new member states, including Cyprus.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told the Cyprus Mail yesterday that no such request had been made.

DIKO crosses north for groundbreaking meeting with Denktash

DIKO and the Turkish Cypriot Democrat Party (DP) yesterday agreed to disagree on core issues of the Cyprus problem.

The meeting was held at the offices of the DP in the north.
It was the first time a DIKO delegation crossed the checkpoint and it was made possible after the Turkish Cypriot authorities agreed that identity cards or passports would not be necessary.
