Man accused of trying to kill sister’s boyfriend

A MAN from Paphos was remanded in custody for eight days yesterday in connection with the attempted murder of his sister’s lover.

Christodoulos Theodosiou, 23, was shot in Paphos on Sunday at around 7.30am after his girlfriend’s brother returned home and found them together. Theodosiou was rushed to Paphos General Hospital where he underwent surgery on the gunshot wounds to the left side of his stomach. Doctors say he is in a serious condition but out of danger.

According to police, Georgios Charalambous, 23, came home Sunday morning and found Theodosiou in the house with his sister. An argument ensued after which he took out a shotgun used for hunting and allegedly shot the victim.

Charalambous was later arrested just after midnight and remanded in custody for eight days yesterday.

During the hearing at Paphos District Court, CID officer Nicos Tsapis told the court that the suspect had claimed during questioning that he did not intend to shoot the 23-year-old boyfriend of his sister, and that the gun went off by accident.

Tsapis said Charalambous told police he only picked up the gun to frighten the victim following a big row after he found him with his sister in the house.

He is now under investigation for the attempted murder of Theodosiou.

Paphos police director Michalakis Papageorgiou said the victim was having an affair with the suspect’s sister – “something which it seems (Charalambous) did not approve of with the result that, in conditions still under investigation, he took the shotgun from the house and shot at the victim,” he said.
