Sam bid’s to beat his own record with monster kebab

THE owner of fast food chain Sam’s Food will be attempting to break his own Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest doner kebab next Saturday in Limassol.

Sami Eid yesterday told the Cyprus Mail: “I am doing this for charity, for the Maronite Antonine Sisters, who desperately need a new residence. I am hoping to raise anything between £10,000 and £30,000. This will be done by selling kebab coupons to members of the public.”

Eid expects the kebab, made of chicken, to weigh 1,700 kilos, to stand 1.7 metres in height and to have a diameter of approximately 1.5 metres.

He said “the kebab will be cooked in the main car park of the Potamos Yermasoyia’s tourist area, by the bridge. A team of 15-30 cooks will start preparing it on the morning of Saturday June 11 and I expect it to take between two to three hours to cook. We will then start serving it to the public over a period of 24 hours.”

Eid set the current record on June 10, 2001, with a kebab that weighed in at 1,504 kilos. It measured 1.5 metres in height and 1.4 metres in diameter. It’s estimated that at least 6,500 people feasted on the oozing one and a half tonne mass of roasting chicken.

More details will be unveiled today at a news conference at the cultural centre of Yermsoyia Municipality.
