RENOWNED columnist, photographer and cultural figure, George Lanitis, has died aged 69.
Born in Famagusta on February 23, 1936, Lanitis passed away on Sunday night after suffering from kidney trouble for some time.

Taxi drivers revolt in Paphos

PAPHOS taxi drivers yesterday started an indefinite strike in reaction to the operation of a bus company, which they claim was taking their business away.

Around 50 strikers blocked the junction leading to the airport, causing disruption to the town’s traffic.

Paphos police director Michalakis Papageorgiou visited the strikers and discussed their problems.

Theodorou: ‘Illegal immigration in northern Europe is a fairytale’

JUSTICE Minister Doros Theodorou yesterday suggested that illegal immigration was a Mediterranean phenomenon and urged the European Union to face it as such.

Speaking after a visit at the immigration service, Theodorou said illegal immigration flourished in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France and Spain.

‘Lazy municipalities lead to fake marriages’

THE SAME people have married different parties at the same town hall two and three times, Justice Minister Doros Theodorou charged yesterday.

The minister was taking a shot at local authorities, which, he suggested, were showing a lackadaisical attitude to marriage procedures and the problem of marriages of convenience.

Truck turns over on highway

THREE men were injured yesterday after his light truck overturned on the Nicosia-Limassol motorway, blocking traffic for around two hours.

Two of them men, aged 34 and 36-years-old were discharged after being treated, while an 18-year-old was kept for observation.

The accident happened at around 1.50 pm, creating a three-kilometre long traffic jam.

CYPRIOT women from both sides of the divide yesterday joined their voices in reaffirming their desire for peace and reunification on the island.

They met at the Ledra Palace hotel, in the Nicosia buffer zone, to prepare their piece of a global patchwork representing the ideal world of women from every country.

Illegal delivery

A 34-YEAR-OLD woman was arrested in the north for supplying her husband with 15 grams of marijuana and 38 tablets only supplied on prescription while visiting him in Nicosia State Prison on Saturday. The marijuana, hidden in a transparent nylon bag, was discovered when the package she had brought to her husband was searched by officials at the prison.

British exporters go on show

SUPERCATEX, the British Products and Services Catalogue Exhibition, will be in Cyprus at the Hilton Park Hotel, in Nicosia, tomorrow for three days.

It will be the first visit to the island for the popular business-to-business exhibition and the 119th worldwide.
