Contract signed for traffic cameras

TRAFFIC cameras will soon be on the roads after the Ministry of Communications announced a contract for their supply yesterday.

Speaking to reporters Minister Haris Thrasou said the cameras, costing 6.5million euros, would be installed over five different stages.

Thrasou added that the ministry had bought 237 traffic light cameras, 195 speed cameras and eight mobile cameras. The cameras, bought on a provisional contract from Electromatic Constructions Ltd, can also snap drivers not wearing seatbelts and using a mobile telephone without a hands-free set.

The cameras will first be used on a nine-month pilot scheme.

Also upbeat by the purchase is the Minister of Justice, Doros Theodorou, who described the move as “a positive step towards combating the serious problem of traffic violations in Cyprus”.
