Traffic chaos out of control

Sir,

It is with great concern that I view the present state of enforcement of traffic laws as almost zero in the larger cities of Cyprus.

Every day and especially on weekends and at night, ignorant drivers flout every law in the book, not giving a damn about their fellow drivers, failing to respect the laws of the road, not caring about the consequences of breaking and violating traffic laws and turning their noses up at police, who somehow don’t give much effort to enforcement.

Needless to say, there are many avoidable accidents leading to death and dismemberment, because drivers, especially young drivers, want to get from A to B in the shortest possible time no matter what the consequences are, thinking this is macho.

I have lived in US and Canada, where plain police cars intermingle with the traffic and give summonses to the worst offenders by surprise. Can this not be done here in Cyprus?

Speeding is not the only offence causing accidents. Tailgating, running red lights and stop signs, illegal passing, and overtaking are only a few of the major offences not being looked at remember your old driving instructor in London – “overtakers end up at the undertakers”! How true.
