Talks hopes after Moscow meeting

A THAW in Cyprus-Turkey relations during an impromptu meeting of the main protagonists in Moscow yesterday appears to have opened the way for a new round of talks, Ankara and Nicosia said last night.

Rates to come down with ERM

CYPRUS’ admission into the ERM-2 euro waiting room in April creates conditions for cheaper borrowing, the finance minister said yesterday, implying a cut in domestic interest rates.

“Admission creates the right conditions for the convergence of interest rates… which would benefit consumers,” Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said.

CONSTRUCTION of the new Nicosia general hospital, which has been plagued by delays and problems, will be finished by the end of this year or the beginning of 2006, Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou said yesterday.

A BLOODSTAIN on a Pakistani defendant’s left boot matched a murder victim’s DNA, the Nicosia Assizes Court said yesterday.

The trial over the murder last July of 38-year-old contractor Pavlos Christodoulou, resumed yesterday with testimony from the genetics expert who tested all the evidence collected by police.

NICOSIA will be in the spotlight of world culture in the autumn of next year, as it hosts Manifesta 6, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, considered to be one of the most important artistic events worldwide.

Soyer says Tassos should be taken to court

TURKISH Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Ferdi Soyer is threatening to sue President Tassos Papadopoulos for war crimes in an international court. Soyer made the comments in an interview published by Politis yesterday.

The Republican Turkish Party member continued his criticism of Papadopoulos yesterday in comments made to mark Europe Day.

Veterans gather for war tribute

CYPRIOT war veterans held a sombre gathering yesterday to pay tribute to the millions of people killed during WWII.

Some 30,000 Greek and Turkish Cypriots joined the British regiment to fight against fascism. Two-and-a-half-thousand were captured and around 600 killed. They are buried in 49 cemeteries in 18 countries.
