Bomb scare

NICOSIA north was in a brief panic on Thursday evening after witnesses reported a suspicious package outside a shop in the heart of Nicosia.
On arrival at the scene police, taking security precautions, cordoned off the area and bomb disposal experts examined the bag discovering that the contents were harmless.

Heroin arrest

IN A drugs operation on Tuesday, the Turkish Cypriot police narcotics team arrested a man for the possession of 100 grams of heroin.

Police swept into action after a tip-off on Monday and detained 49 year-old Ali Demir, who admitted to being in possession of the illegal substance.

Ten grams of the drugs were found on his person at the time of his arrest. After questioning by police, Demir admitted he had hidden the rest of the drugs in various places at the Bogaz picnic area and that he arrived in Cyprus from Turkey on April 26 at Kyrenia Port.

A court on Thursday decided Demir was to be held for three days more days for further questioning.

Town hall attack

A 29-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by police in the north after being caught red-handed breaking the window of the Lefka town hall. Police say the man was intending to steal from the building in the incident which took place at 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Car blaze

A VEHICLE belonging to Metin Farisoglu burst into flames in the garden of Serkan Ozaltaylier of Morphou on Wednesday evening. Police say the fire was likely to have been caused by an electrical fault.
