Bag snatcher only managed to rip woman’s blouse

THE SUSPECT tried to snatch the woman’s bag while passing next to her in his car but instead he managed to rip her blouse, a Nicosia court heard yesterday.

George Papageorgiou was remanded in custody for eight days on suspicion of purse snatching.

Police said a 27-year-old woman complained that while walking down Stasinou Street in Engomi last Saturday at around 2am, she was approached by a car whose driver tried to wrest her purse off her.

He stretched his hand out of the window and tried to steal the bag using force, the court heard.

The man was unsuccessful, though the woman’s blouse was ripped during the struggle.
But a couple of minutes later in an adjacent street, a woman’s purse was snatched out of her hand by the driver of the same car.

The 22-year-old woman said she was on Kallimahou Street when a car approached, and its driver violently pulled the bag out of her hand.

The bag contained a mobile phone worth £80 and £20 in cash, police told the court.
From the information they received from the women, police questioned the suspect who admitted snatching the purse and named another person as his accomplice.

He was arrested yesterday while an arrest warrant has been issued against his accomplice, the court heard.
