Animal cruelty

Sir,
Your last Friday’s front-page article (‘Unspeakable acts of cruelty’) and photograph appalled me and I am sure, many others.  The nightmare picture can only be described as something from the Holocaust: somewhere among that detritus, barely alive animals, young and old, are suffering in silence as they are mown to death: just so much rubbish!

We British are often accused of being a bit daft about our animals, although sadly, even in Britain, animal cruelty exists and the RSPCA is kept only too busy! In any ‘civilised’ race, ill-treatment of animals is totally unacceptable. From the tiniest fluffy kitten to an elderly donkey that has worked all its life, we are all animals and God’s creation. As supposedly ‘higher-minded’ creatures, we humans have been granted overall stewardship of the animal kingdom. Whether working or just as loving companions, our animal friends reward us with their loyalty and their labours. We should thank God for them and treat them with proper respect.
