Tainted goat’s milk

VETERINARY services yesterday discovered traces of antibiotics and antibacterial agents in fresh goat’s milk, following random checks at a number of dairy factories in the Paphos district.

The milk was delivered to and processed by the following dairy factories: Eleftheria Londou in Kato Polemidhia, Londos in Ipsonas, Andreas Gerolemaios in Ipsonas and Elisavet Antoniou in Pachna.
At the Eleftheria Londou factory, inspectors found 100 kilograms of halloumi cheese contaminated with antibiotics and antibacterial substances; the batch serial number was 23.2.06.

The affected products at the other factories were: Londos, 100kg of halloumi cheese (no batch number); Andreas Gerolemaios, 40kg of halloumi, batch serial number 24.2.06; and Elisavet Antoniou, 30kg of halloumi (no batch).

According to the Agriculture Ministry, the Londos and Elisavet Antoniou factories operated without a license from the veterinary services and have been repeatedly reported in the past.

The ministry has urged people who may have purchased the tainted cheese not to consume it.
