I AM a Turkish Cypriot. I spent 42 years of my life in the UK, Canada and US and came back in 1998 to spend my retiring years in my country of birth.

CyTA hands over hacker case to police

THE Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) has handed over to police the case regarding the publication by hackers of broadband users’ usernames and passwords, the Cyprus Mail has learned.

It was reported yesterday that the usernames and passwords of around 8,500 broadband users had been posted on a website by hackers who managed to gain access to CyTA’s service i-choice.

CYPRUS’ EU Health Commissioner Marcos Kyprianou said yesterday he had encouraged President Tassos Papadopoulos to quite smoking during discussions between the two men on EU issues affecting Cyprus.

Prior to his first official visit to the island, which began yesterday, Kyprianou had said he would press for stricter implementation of the national anti-smoking law.

DISY hits out against police promotions

DISY deputy Ionas Nicolaou told a news conference that among police officers promoted for their resistance to the 1974 coup, were 13 who had already been promoted for their role in the resistance.

Nicolaou urged the government to evaluate the authenticity of officers who fought against the coup.

Turkish Cypriot leaders drop objections to customs union

THREE Turkish Cypriot leaders said yesterday they would express no objection to Turkey signing an EU customs union agreement with the Republic of Cyprus – as long as Turkey accompanied the agreement with a statement that customs union did not constitute full political recognition of the Republic.
