CyBC dismiss name alteration reports

CyBC officials have played down claims that the station was thinking of altering the names of towns in the north of the island after the point was raised at meeting of politicians yesterday.

The heated discussion occurred during a meeting of the education committee after DISY deputy Prodromos Prodromou and DIKO deputy Antigoni Papadopoulou raised the subject over recent reports in the media that CyBC had decided to change the naming of certain areas in the occupied areas.

It had been reported that the bilingual show Biz/Emeis would change the name of areas in the north to how they are pronounced by the Turkish Cypriot ‘government’. However, it was later revealed by the general manager of CyBC, Marios Mavrikios, that the motion had been fully rejected by the board of directors of CyBC.

Mavrikios added that the reason the motion was brought up was when a Turkish Cypriot board member, who is part of an external committee, back in May suggested renaming the names of the towns in the north.
